BREATH OF LIFE - Are you breathing correctly? by Roberta Lemon, B.S.Y.A.(C.I.)
One of my main concerns as a Yoga teacher is "Breathing". I can honestly say
that 99% of all my new students come to me breathing 'backwards', i.e. breathing
from the chest and not into the lower lungs, as we are born breathing. This is
usually caused from general stress.
If only people knew how beneficial it is to breathe
correctly and how their lives
can be transformed, just from completely consciously changing the way
they breathe! When breathing correctly, oxygen pumps around the body
getting to all the parts
that need it the most. That is, any areas that are painful or sore can
receive
oxygen from INSIDE the body's system, to assist in the healing process. You can blow oxygen on a painful area from the outside and not receive much
benefit, but once oxygen is pumping around the body, in the way it was designed
to?.we can cure ourselves of all kinds of 'ailments'?just like I cured myself some years ago of years of using addictive inhalers for chronic asthma from the age of 12. Now I rarely
get asthmatic any more and only if I'm around overly smelly doggies or pungent
long haired animals. Just by completely consciously changing the way I breathe.
To make sure you are breathing correctly: Stand up straight with one hand on the belly and one hand flat against the small
of the back. Inhale, taking the breath down into the lower lungs. Feel the belly
moving into the hand as the lungs fill with air. Picture it: as you INhale,
the lungs fill with air and expand, just like blowing up a balloon, pushing the
belly OUT! As you EXhale, feel the belly moving back towards the spine; the lungs
deflate as the air is expelled through the nose or the mouth and the belly moves
IN. (It is better to inhale through the nose, where the hairs in the nose can
filter somewhat the air and exhale through the nose or the mouth). Nearly everyone
who comes to class has been lead to believe that as you inhale you should suck
your belly IN. How can this be? It is not possible to inhale naturally and have
the belly suck in when the lungs are trying to expand and fill with air. Or, try
it lying down: place the hand on the belly and notice how the belly RISES as you
inhale and SINKS DOWN as you exhale.
So if the student sucks the belly IN when they
inhale, they are breathing from
the chest, known as "shallow breathing". I can see it instantly as the
chest
and shoulders heave upwards. (We want to breathe in and out, not up and
down). In this case, the air whips around the chest and out, depriving
the body of
most
of the breath's oxygen. Also, the little air that is left in the lower
lungs
stagnates, keeping germs locked into the lower lungs?YUK!! but just
until that
deep belly breath is taken.
I promise you, in my yoga classes most of the people who come are breathing backwards
and are encouraged to consciously change the way they breathe.. and when they
get it, they never look back! It takes about 3 weeks of practice (whenever you
can think about it), to override the old habit with the new, good one and then
your subconcious takes over and you breathe that way all the time. It just clicks
in?the body LOVES to breathe this way! You have more energy, less stress, better
sleeping patterns, better moods...everything improves, just from breathing correctly! Watch babies and animals breathing?and
duplicate! It is one of my most important goals - to get the world BREATHING again!

HATHA YOGA
Hatha Yoga puts the responsibility for health and the means for attaining it
into your own hands. The body is an inter-relationship of ten, equally vital
systems. The practice of Yoga asanas, (or postures), ensures the healthy, balanced
functioning of these ten systems.
1. The Skeletal System. Science has shown that even the bones increase in strength through use. The
asanas move each joint to it's limit every day.
2. The Muscular System.
Efficient muscles are long, free of stored tensions and possess good
tone. The mental stress stored in the muscles is removed through the
practice of the
postures and correct breathing. When every muscle is stretched to
capacity each
day, the accumulated tension, tightness and shortening are counteracted
and the
body retains its suppleness.
3. The Circulatory System. Although an adult's heart weighs less than a pound, it pumps 2,000 gallons
of blood each day (50 million gallons over a lifetime) through 100,000 miles of
blood vessels! The Yogic postures increase the flow of blood to specific areas
of the body so that all parts are nourished in turn.
4. The Nervous System. The
asanas keep the spine flexible so there is no impingement on the
nerves. Blood and energy are directed to specific nerve plexi in
various poses.
5. The Digestive System. Certain postures stimulate the digestive system, relieve pressure on the nerves
associated with digestion, alleviate internal congestion and promote good assimilation.
6. The Eliminative System. Yogic techniques help cleanse the intestinal tract, stimulate peristalsis,
help cleanse the kidneys and skin and promote proper elimination.
7. The Respiratory System. Senility, poor concentration and mental fatigue can be caused by lack of oxygen
in the brain cells. Deep breathing in the postures cleanses the lungs and stimulates
the cardiovascular system. The Yogi develops a strong respiratory system, a strong
breath and a powerful life-force.
8. The Endocrine System. The glands regulate the body's metabolism and vital functions. Certain postures
balance specific glands, such as the pituitary and pineal in the Head Stand and
the thyroid and parathyroid in the Shoulder Stand.
9. The Pranic System. Prana is the life-force and basis of Yoga practices. Through Yogic breathing
and postures one can have a direct experience of this energy and connect with
its abundance.
10. The Mental System. The correct practice of Yoga produces mental clarity and a quality of attention
that pervades the whole body. This understanding is the fruit of self-observation
